In the bleak mid-winter Frosty wind made moan; Earth stood hard as iron, Water like a stone; Snow had fallen, snow on snow, Snow on snow, In the bleak mid-winter Long ago. Our God, heaven cannot hold Him Nor earth sustain, Heaven and earth shall flee away When He comes to reign: In the bleak mid-winter A stable-place sufficed The Lord God Almighty — Jesus Christ. Enough for Him, whom Cherubim Worship night and day, A breastful of milk And a mangerful of hay; Enough for Him, whom Angels Fall down before, The ox and ass and camel Which adore. Angels and Archangels May have gathered there, Cherubim and seraphim Thronged the air; But only His Mother In her maiden bliss Worshipped the Beloved With a kiss.

1. Come, thou long expected Jesus, born to set thy people free; from our fears and sins release us, let us find our rest in thee. Israel's strength and consolation, hope of all the earth thou art; dear desire of every nation, joy of every longing heart. 2. Born thy people to deliver, born a child and yet a King, born to reign in us forever, now thy gracious kingdom bring. By thine own eternal spirit rule in all our hearts alone; by thine all sufficient merit, raise us to thy glorious throne. — Charles Wesley[15]

about

Advent is about waiting and revealing the mystery of the incarnation. Christmas has become so many things in our world, but Advent remains distinct. While people all over the planet rush to buy things, rush to prepare for feasts and parties (which we all love), the Advent tradition calls us to stop... to wait... to listen... to have hope that there is something far greater happening than the hustle and bustle of Black Friday. These songs are designed to draw us into that Advent tradition of slowing down, of waiting in the mystery of the Universe for something better.

Recorded and reworked over a long period of time, these are songs and arrangements that This Side of Eve plays every year at The Open Door during Advent and Christmas. These three songs are traditional and even ancient hymns of the church that have been sung for hundreds of years. They may be different here, with even slightly reworked melodies and very different instrumentation, but we hope they hold on the original intent to draw the listener into something deep that creates a pause of contemplation.
